Australia's Labor government has decided to pursue a gas reservation policy rather than a tax, according to ABC News & Headlines – Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The move signals a shift in how the federal government plans to secure domestic gas supplies.
The policy has already drawn regional resistance. The Age reports that Western Australia is pushing back against the national reservation plan, with the state opposing a one-size-fits-all approach from Canberra.
There are also signs the plan has been adjusted. According to the Australian Financial Review, Labor has softened its proposed 20 per cent gas reservation requirement. Separately, The Australian reports that a Santos-backed LNG exporter has won a reprieve from the reservation scheme. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australia has eased its local gas supply rules, which has reduced concerns among Asian buyers.
